Introduction
In order to fully appreciate the role of the Chaplain as a father-substitute in an isolation unit of a Children’s Hospital, it is necessary to understand the dynamics contributing to the child’s development and well-being. Without a basic understanding of the child in relation to himself and his parents, the Chaplain will have little effect in meeting the basic needs the child has.
This paper is designed to outline those areas of concern that speak to the issue of father-substitution, showing why the Chaplain can and should function in a role that meets the child in his greatest need. To this end, the paper is divided into sections that contribute to a unified whole.
