Good Bishop Rowan

Bishop Rowan did look out
On the feast of Gobnait
With the discord round about
Deep and full and irate
Brightly shone the sun that day
Though the news was cruel
When a Bishop came his way
Adding further fuel

“Hither, priest, and stand by me
If thou know’st it, telling
Yonder Bishop, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?”
“Sire, he lives a good way away
neath the Gulf of Gulnea
Right in old Africay
By the Niger Delta.”

“Bring me flesh and bring me wine
Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I will test his spine
When we bear him thither.”
Priest and Primate forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the laity’s wild lament
And the bitter weather

“My Lord, the night is darker now
And the wind blows stronger
Fails my heart, I know not how,
I can go no longer.”
“Mark my footsteps, my good priest
Tread thou in them boldly
Thou shalt find th’schismatic feast
Freeze thy blood less coldly.”

In his master's steps he trod
Where the crud lay dinted
Heat was in the very sod
And th’pamphlets he had printed
Therefore, Anglicans, be sure
Discern and Piety possessing
Those who now will use the door
Care not for His blessing!
