Apophis the snake killed by the cat

Cats joined human community in the Nile valley early in Pharaonic or possibly prehistoric times. Aside from killing the rats which ate stored grain they also attacked snakes or brought them to the attention of the people. The light reflected in the eyes of a cat at night were considered to be the sun carried through the night by the cat. This light helped the Ra the god of day in his journey after sunset. The god of night as sometimes depicted as a snake called Apophis. The cat killed the snake to insure that the new day was born each morning.
