The Burial of Jesus

(Joseph of Arimathaea speaks)

Lift him up tenderly. Bear him with pride.

      Here is our Master, godsped to his glory.

      Titles shall be told of him, retold in story,

How he preached Love to a whole countryside.

Cross the broad valley now; climb the hill’s side.

      There, straight ahead, lies the depository

      Where we shall rest him, bathed clean of his gory

Wounds and abrasions, and there he shall bide.

Father, receive him: often he spoke of you,

      Bade us adore you and taught us to pray,

            Came as a sacrifice Love would consume;

Only as such can we ever construe

      His life and his teachings including this day.

            The shell that is left we consign to this tomb.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you,

R. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
