Sonnets to enhance the Lectionary
Gabriella

Gabriella
comes from God to Mary -
virgin out of wedlock - seeks a child;
to give her womb, though she herself reviled.
The wanton Spirit smiles; so very merry!
Fourteen years of age, is she too wild?
A teen not shy; will try - and take a chance!
Why not embrace an angel, start a dance?
Enthusiasm! Innocence! Beguiled!
Good Joseph, sturdy builder, dreams a dream
Protect the girl, who hides beneath his wings
Just like a gentle mother, kindness brings
God’s on the prowl and things, not as they seem!
Strange the awesome way relationships have turned
Stranger still the birth for which the world has yearned!
