An Imperfect Life

poetry by Fr. Harold Macdonald

The Series

Ishmael

We should have known God didn’t give a damn

for our sense of respectability

- who is, is not, of the nobility -

but makes a wild jackass of a man

to be the father of a million folk.

What a dreary handful! Hagar’s crazy kid!

She, having seen God’s face, And God forbid,

she’s not amused at feeling like God’s joke.

A banished slave, an awkward son, no less

yet mentioned in dispatches in God’s plan.

Not unwelcome, is God’s misfit man

receives a destiny no one would guess.

Do not exclude the constant deviant

God’s holy saints are less than elegant.
