An Imperfect Life

poetry by Fr. Harold Macdonald

The Series

God Shoots, God Scores

Belief in God makes ample common sense,

indeed our circumstance demands it.

Dogmatic faith does not obscure but fits;

nature and grace each other compliment.

The trouble is it doesn’t often work.

Instead, distinctions, paradoxes, vex.

Its claim is simple, its excuse complex;

in the fine print, denial always lurks.

But God is proud of the divinity,

acts not according to our wisest thoughts

determines not as we think heaven ought;

God’s self-regard exceeds infinity.

Ergo, attend God’s sovereign, holy, Name,

And you will see Who shoots, Who scores, Who wins the game.
