An Imperfect Life

Holy Saturday Liturgy

The Church is dark, hushed whispers in the porch.

Then scratch of flint; a spark leaps up, just so;

the tinder lights, the servers faces glow

the rector sighs relief and puts away his torch

Another year, creation has begun

from darkness, light; from death a living world,

the reign of God begun, Christ’s flag unfurled.

The flame is passed to candles one by one.

The lessons tell how God makes all things new,

The victory of the Lamb infuses all

The power of God has set aside the Fall

a joyful people feel it in the pew.

Christ’s rising shakes creation from its knell

a miracle the Church will tell and tell
