General principles...

The following catechesis is premised on the assumption that nurture in the faith is primarily the responsibility of the parents within the home setting. One parent or god-parent is expected to attend Classes with each candidate. The rabbinical role is provided by the priest during the class session by way of dialogue and teaching using examples that help illustrate the lesson.

The scriptural pattern builds on the theme introduced on the Class Day and encourages parents and youth to share their faith in a non-threatening atmosphere in their home setting over the following week. Parents are encouraged to share their faith with their child(ren); and the opportunity is reciprocal. The suggestion is that a commitment be made to have three family discussions each week of a minimum of 5 minutes at a meal time.

Five classes will be presented before Lent and five classes during Lent. Attendance at Class and Sunday worship is expected if a candidate intends to be presented for Confirmation. There is no assumption made that anyone will be presented solely on the basis of class attendance. Participation in Class will be taken into account and certainly each candidate's faith commitment will be sought and clarified at the conclusion of the course.

Scripture passages are taken from the New Revised Standard Version.
