Here
is thy footstool and there rest thy feet
where live the poorest,
and lowliest,
and lost.
When
I try to bow to thee, my obeisance
cannot reach
down to the depth
where thy feet rest among the poorest,
and lowliest, and lost.
Pride
can never approach to where
thou walkest in the clothes
of the humble among the poorest,
and lowliest, and lost.
My
heart can never find its way to where thou keepest
company with the companionless among the poorest,
the lowliest, and the lost.
Amen. |
This
prayer helps us express our response to the awesome transcendence of God in
our lives, while at the same time recognizing the mystery of the immanence
of God’s presence in the lives and history of humanity. We call that
mystery the Incarnation, but we know it more practically in the many
gestures of Grace that we experience in our lives, day by day. And,
further, the prayer reminds us of the opportunities that are ours, and our
hesitancy as well, to enter into the ministry Jesus calls each of us to
exercise by virtue of our Baptismal promises. We cannot accomplish this on
our own. We know that. The burden is too great. But the Grace assured us in
the holy Communion enables us to do more than we can ask or imagine! Placed
on your fridge door, or over your sink it can be a daily prayer offered in
humble thanksgiving.
