The End of the Year

Alone in cell,

with Triune God,

the candle flickering low.

A troubled soul

in earnest prayer,

Lord, mercy, mercy show.

The air is full of sin, dear Lord,

this last night of the year.

Have mercy, Lord, have mercy,

to you are sinners dear.

How weak and frail those sinners,

yet you love them, love them so.

I pray that thro’ this

lone night watch

to heaven they will go.

The candle now is nearly out,

it’s almost dead of night.

The troubled soul now pleads again,

Dear Lord, keep them aright.

Spearheaded prayer goes straight to God

from that lone little cell,

to God who sent his only Son

for worldly sin to quell.

The flickering now is over

The dead of night is here.

Whisth! Lo! I hear the peal of bells

across the new-born year.

They peal, those bells of Clonfert,

what joy and hope they bring,

our hearts they raise to God on high,

while alleluias ring.

Their reassuring chimes fills souls,

serenity sublime.

For all this year

now here,

Thank God,

Mercy, Love divine.
