Sunday - Repentance
Luke 1:57-80, 3:1-20,
7:18-30
Luke
1:57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a
son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his
great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 On the eighth day they
came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah
after his father. 60 But his mother said, "No; he is to be called John."
61 They said to her, "None of your relatives has this name." 62 Then they
began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him.
63 He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And all of
them were amazed. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue
freed, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 Fear came over all their
neighbors, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire
hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them pondered them and said, "What
then will this child become?" For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with
him. 67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and
spoke this prophecy: 68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has
looked favorably on his people and redeemed them. 69 He has raised up a
mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, 70 as he spoke
through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71 that we would be
saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. 72 Thus he
has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy
covenant, 73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us
74 that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him
without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will
go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give knowledge of salvation
to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. 78 By the tender mercy of
our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, 79 to give light to
those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet
into the way of peace." 80 The child grew and became strong in spirit, and
he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.
Luke
3:1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when
Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and
his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and
Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and
Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
3 He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of
the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the
wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every
valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and
the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; 6 and
all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" 7 John said to the crowds that
came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to
flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not
begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell
you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 Even
now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that
does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." 10 And the
crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" 11 In reply he said to them,
"Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever
has food must do likewise." 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized,
and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" 13 He said to them,
"Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you." 14 Soldiers also
asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort
money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with
your wages." 15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were
questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the
Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with
water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to
untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing
floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn
with unquenchable fire." 18 So, with many other exhortations, he
proclaimed the good news to the people. 19 But Herod the ruler, who had
been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because
of all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added to them all by
shutting up John in prison.
Luke
7:18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John
summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are
you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" 20 When the
men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you to
ask, 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?'" 21
Jesus had just then cured many people of diseases, plagues, and evil
spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind. 22 And he answered
them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive
their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the
dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them. 23 And blessed
is anyone who takes no offense at me." 24 When John's messengers had gone,
Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into
the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you
go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who put on fine
clothing and live in luxury are in royal palaces. 26 What then did you go
out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This
is the one about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead
of you, who will prepare your way before you.' 28 I tell you, among those
born of women no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of
God is greater than he." 29 (And all the people who heard this, including
the tax collectors, acknowledged the justice of God, because they had been
baptized with John's baptism. 30 But by refusing to be baptized by him,
the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God's purpose for themselves.)

White Lily
Monday - Hope for a Future
Luke 1:26-38
Luke
1:26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in
Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was
Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came
to her and said, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you." 29 But
she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting
this might be. 30 The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you
have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb and
bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be
called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the
throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob
forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34 Mary said to the
angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" 35 The angel said to her,
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be
called Son of God. 36 And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has
also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to
be barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God." 38 Then Mary said,
"Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your
word." Then the angel departed from her.

Mother and Child
Tuesday - Joy
Luke 1:39-56
Luke
1:39 In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town
in the hill country, 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and
greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child
leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and
exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is
the fruit of your womb. 43 And why has this happened to me, that the
mother of my Lord comes to me? 44 For as soon as I heard the sound of your
greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who
believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by
the Lord." 46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit
rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked with favor on the
lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me
blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is
his name. 50 His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to
generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the
proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52 He has brought down the powerful
from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53 he has filled the hungry
with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his
servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 according to the promise
he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever." 56
And Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her
home.

Matthew 1:19-25
Matthew
1:19 Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose
her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20 But just when
he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as
your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She
will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his
people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what had been
spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 "Look, the virgin shall
conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means,
"God is with us." 24 When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of
the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25 but had no marital
relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Star
Friday - Worship
Matthew 2:1-12
Matthew 2:1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in
Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking,
"Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed
his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." 3 When King
Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and
calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he
inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They told him, "In
Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6 'And you,
Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of
Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people
Israel.'" 7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from
them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to
Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you
have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." 9
When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went
the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place
where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were
overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with
Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening
their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and
myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they
left for their own country by another road.
