The Tree
Sunday - the Jesse Tree
1 Samuel
16:1-13 and Isaiah
11:1-10
1 Samuel 16:1 The LORD said to Samuel, "How
long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over
Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the
Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons." 2 Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears of it,
he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, 'I
have come to sacrifice to the LORD.' 3 Invite Jesse
to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall
anoint for me the one whom I name to you." 4 Samuel
did what the LORD commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city
came to meet him trembling, and said, "Do you come peaceably?" 5 He said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to
the LORD; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." And he
sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought,
"Surely the LORD's anointed is now before the LORD." 7
But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the
height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD does not
see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD
looks on the heart." 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab,
and made him pass before Samuel. He said, "Neither has the LORD chosen
this one." 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he
said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." 10
Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse,
"The LORD has not chosen any of these." 11 Samuel
said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?" And he said, "There remains yet
the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse,
"Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here." 12 He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and
had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The LORD said, "Rise and anoint him;
for this is the one." 13 Then Samuel took the horn
of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit
of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then
set out and went to Ramah.
Isaiah 11:1 A shoot shall come out from the
stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 2
The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge
and the fear of the LORD. 3 His delight shall be in
the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide
by what his ears hear; 4 but with righteousness he
shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he
shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of
his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5 Righteousness
shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his
loins. 6 The wolf shall live with the lamb, the
leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling
together, and a little child shall lead them. 7 The
cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the
lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing
child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put
its hand on the adder's den. 9 They will not hurt or
destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the
knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. 10
On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the
nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

Dove
Monday - God and Creation
Genesis 1:1-2:3
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the
earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of
the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then
God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw that
the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God
called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was
evening and there was morning, the first day. 6 And God said, "Let there
be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from
the waters." 7 So God made the dome and separated the waters that were
under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. 8
God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the
second day. 9 And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered
together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. 10
God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together
he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, "Let the
earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every
kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it." And it was so. 12 The
earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and
trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it
was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. 14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate
the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for
days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give
light upon the earth." And it was so. 16 God made the two great lights--
the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night--
and the stars. 17 God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon
the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the
light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was
evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20 And God said, "Let the
waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the
earth across the dome of the sky." 21 So God created the great sea
monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which
the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it
was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill
the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." 23 And there
was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24 And God said, "Let
the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping
things and wild animals of the earth of every kind." And it was so. 25 God
made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every
kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God
saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our
image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish
of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over
all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that
creeps upon the earth." 27 So God created humankind in his image, in the
image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God
blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill
the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and
over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the
earth." 29 God said, "See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that
is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit;
you shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to
every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth,
everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for
food." And it was so. 31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed,
it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth
day.
Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all
their multitude. 2 And on the seventh day God finished the work that he
had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had
done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God
rested from all the work that he had done in creation.

Tree with Fruit
Tuesday - Adam and Eve and the First Sin
Genesis
2:4-3:24
Genesis 2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth
when they were created. In the day that the LORD God made the earth and
the heavens, 5 when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb
of the field had yet sprung up-- for the LORD God had not caused it to
rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; 6 but a
stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground-- 7 then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed
into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. 8
And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put
the man whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground the LORD God made to grow
every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of
life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil. 10 A river flows out of Eden to water the garden, and from
there it divides and becomes four branches. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Havilah, where
there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx
stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one
that flows around the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river
is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the
Euphrates. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden
to till it and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You may
freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat
of it you shall die." 18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the
man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner." 19 So out
of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird
of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them;
and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20
The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to
every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as
his partner. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man,
and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with
flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made
into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, "This at
last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called
Woman, for out of Man this one was taken." 24 Therefore a man leaves his
father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.
Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild
animal that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say,
'You shall not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the
serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; 3 but God
said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of
the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.'" 4 But the serpent
said to the woman, "You will not die; 5 for God knows that when you eat of
it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and
evil." 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that
it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make
one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her
husband, who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were
opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves
together and made loincloths for themselves. 8 They heard the sound of the
LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the
man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among
the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, and said to
him, "Where are you?" 10 He said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden,
and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself." 11 He said, "Who
told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I
commanded you not to eat?" 12 The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be
with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate." 13 Then the LORD God
said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The
serpent tricked me, and I ate." 14 The LORD God said to the serpent,
"Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among
all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you
will strike his heel." 16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase
your pangs in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet
your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." 17 And
to the man he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife,
and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat
of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it
all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for
you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your
face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you
were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return." 20 The man named
his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD
God made garments of skins for the man and for his wife, and clothed them. 22 Then the LORD God said, "See, the man has become like one of us,
knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out his hand and take also
from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"-- 23 therefore the LORD
God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which
he was taken. 24 He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of
Eden he placed the cherubim, and a sword flaming and turning to guard the
way to the tree of life.

Rainbow
Wednesday - Noah and the Flood
Genesis 6:11-22,
7:17-8:12, and 20; and 9:17
Genesis 6:11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the
earth was filled with violence. 12 And God saw that the earth was corrupt;
for all flesh had corrupted its ways upon the earth. 13 And God said to
Noah, "I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is
filled with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along
with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in the
ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to
make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its width fifty
cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 Make a roof for the ark, and
finish it to a cubit above; and put the door of the ark in its side; make
it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 For my part, I am going to
bring a flood of waters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all
flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth
shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you; and you shall
come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with
you. 19 And of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of
every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male
and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals
according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground according
to its kind, two of every kind shall come in to you, to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every kind of food that is eaten, and store it up;
and it shall serve as food for you and for them." 22 Noah did this; he did
all that God commanded him.
Genesis 7:17 The flood continued forty days on the earth; and the
waters increased, and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters swelled and increased greatly on the earth; and the ark
floated on the face of the waters. 19 The waters swelled so mightily on
the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered; 20 the waters swelled above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits
deep. 21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, domestic
animals, wild animals, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and
all human beings; 22 everything on dry land in whose nostrils was the
breath of life died. 23 He blotted out every living thing that was on the
face of the ground, human beings and animals and creeping things and birds
of the air; they were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and
those that were with him in the ark. 24 And the waters swelled on the
earth for one hundred fifty days.
Genesis 8:1 But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and
all the domestic animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a
wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided; 2 the fountains of the
deep and the windows of the heavens were closed, the rain from the heavens
was restrained, 3 and the waters gradually receded from the earth. At the
end of one hundred fifty days the waters had abated; 4 and in the seventh
month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the
mountains of Ararat. 5 The waters continued to abate until the tenth
month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the
mountains appeared. 6 At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of
the ark that he had made 7 and sent out the raven; and it went to and fro
until the waters were dried up from the earth. 8 Then he sent out the dove
from him, to see if the waters had subsided from the face of the ground; 9
but the dove found no place to set its foot, and it returned to him to the
ark, for the waters were still on the face of the whole earth. So he put
out his hand and took it and brought it into the ark with him. 10 He
waited another seven days, and again he sent out the dove from the ark; 11
and the dove came back to him in the evening, and there in its beak was a
freshly plucked olive leaf; so Noah knew that the waters had subsided from
the earth. 12 Then he waited another seven days, and sent out the dove;
and it did not return to him any more. ... 20 Then Noah built an altar to
the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and
offered burnt offerings on the altar. and Genesis 9:17 God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant
that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth."

Field of Stars
Thursday - Abraham and the Promise
Genesis
12:1-7, and 15:1-6
Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go from your country and
your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 I
will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name
great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you,
and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of
the earth shall be blessed." 4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him;
and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed
from Haran. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother's son Lot, and all
the possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had
acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When
they had come to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram passed through the land to
the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites
were in the land. 7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram, and said, "To your
offspring I will give this land." So he built there an altar to the LORD,
who had appeared to him.
Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram
in a vision, "Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall
be very great." 2 But Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for
I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3
And Abram said, "You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my
house is to be my heir." 4 But the word of the LORD came to him, "This man
shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your
heir." 5 He brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven and count
the stars, if you are able to count them." Then he said to him, "So shall
your descendants be." 6 And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it
to him as righteousness.

Ram
Friday - Offering of Isaac
Genesis 22:1-19
Genesis 22:1 After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him,
"Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." 2 He said, "Take your son, your only
son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him
there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you." 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two
of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the
burnt offering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God
had shown him. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far
away. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey;
the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come
back to you." 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on
his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two
of them walked on together. 7 Isaac said to his father Abraham, "Father!"
And he said, "Here I am, my son." He said, "The fire and the wood are
here, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" 8 Abraham said, "God
himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So the two of
them walked on together. 9 When they came to the place that God had shown
him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his
son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham
reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. 11 But the angel
of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And
he said, "Here I am." 12 He said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy or do
anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your son, your only son, from me." 13 And Abraham looked up and
saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram
and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham
called that place "The LORD will provide"; as it is said to this day, "On
the mount of the LORD it shall be provided." 15 The angel of the LORD
called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and said, "By myself I
have sworn, says the LORD: Because you have done this, and have not
withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will indeed bless you, and I will
make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand
that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of
their enemies, 18 and by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth
gain blessing for themselves, because you have obeyed my voice." 19 So
Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to
Beer-sheba; and Abraham lived at Beer-sheba.

Ladder
Saturday - Jacob: Assurance of the Promise
Genesis 27:41-28:22
Genesis 27:41 Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with
which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, "The days of
mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother
Jacob." 42 But the words of her elder son Esau were told to Rebekah; so
she sent and called her younger son Jacob and said to him, "Your brother
Esau is consoling himself by planning to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my
son, obey my voice; flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran, 44 and stay
with him a while, until your brother's fury turns away-- 45 until your
brother's anger against you turns away, and he forgets what you have done
to him; then I will send, and bring you back from there. Why should I lose
both of you in one day?" 46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my
life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob marries one of the Hittite
women such as these, one of the women of the land, what good will my life
be to me?"
Genesis 28:1 Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged
him, "You shall not marry one of the Canaanite women. 2 Go at once to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father; and take as
wife from there one of the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother. 3
May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and numerous, that you
may become a company of peoples. 4 May he give to you the blessing of
Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you, so that you may take
possession of the land where you now live as an alien-- land that God gave
to Abraham." 5 Thus Isaac sent Jacob away; and he went to Paddan-aram, to
Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and
Esau's mother. 6 Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him
away to Paddan-aram to take a wife from there, and that as he blessed him
he charged him, "You shall not marry one of the Canaanite women," 7 and
that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Paddan-aram. 8
So when Esau saw that the Canaanite women did not please his father Isaac, 9 Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath daughter of Abraham's son
Ishmael, and sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife in addition to the wives
he had. 10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11 He came to a
certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set.
Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay
down in that place. 12 And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on
the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were
ascending and descending on it. 13 And the LORD stood beside him and said,
"I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the
land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; 14 and
your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread
abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and
all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your
offspring. 15 Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go,
and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I
have done what I have promised you." 16 Then Jacob woke from his sleep and
said, "Surely the LORD is in this place-- and I did not know it!" 17 And
he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other
than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." 18 So Jacob rose
early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head
and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called
that place Bethel; but the name of the city was Luz at the first. 20 Then
Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and will keep me in
this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21
so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be
my God, 22 and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be
God's house; and of all that you give me I will surely give one tenth to
you."
